To say that Mauricio Pochettino threw a curveball in yesterday with his team selection for Manchester City would be an understatement. The Lilywhites have four central defenders on their books and Poch fielded all of them, with Juan Foyth making his debut as a right-wingback against the electric Raheem Sterling.

Foyth may have had the second hardest job at The Etihad yesterday, after the ticket sales officers, but he put in an incredible shift as the Lilywhites battled hard in their 1-0 defeat. Phil Foden’s early goal decided the tie, but had the Lilywhites been more clinical and got the rub of the green from the referee then they could easily have taken all three points back from Manchester.
After the events from last Wednesday, it’s hard to bemoan refereeing decisions, and whilst Spurs’ defeat is a tough one to take, the fact that both Manchester United and Arsenal fell to defeat just makes their City loss even more irrelevant. After the game, it’s become even clearer how good Foyth was and the fans are desperate to see him get more game-time in this Spurs squad as he continues to develop into a classy, versatile young defender.

Foyth had a great game against Sterling today, definitely one for the future.

I like him a lot. His positioning in defence sometimes is problematic. But he is calm on the ball and has some really good skills when pressed.

mark my words, this kid is going to be one of the best CB/RB in the world…the technique is unreal, the calmness, the composer…when the lack of experience mistakes shave off he will be a superstar….

This guy is something special. Even the way he handles the interview is mature. Let’s not forget, all in his second language!

Guy has a massive future

The Lilywhites will want to see more of the same from Foyth and will be keen for him to feature on Tuesday against Brighton.
