Tottenham fans on Twitter couldn’t work out why Son was benched yesterday

For the most part, Mauricio Pochettino cannot be faulted for the way he had his side playing yesterday afternoon. However, the one question mark that the supporters had over his setup of the side was the fact that he left Heung-Min Son out and on the bench and instead opted for an extra defender in a three-at-the-back system.

It was clear as day to see what Pochettino was looking to do yesterday. One centre-back for each of the Reds’ front-three, wing-backs to cover the opposition’s dangerous full-backs and a man for man set up in midfield. It didn’t quite work like that, though, and before long the system had been tweaked a couple of times, making the reasons for Son’s starting eleven absence null and void.
Should Son have started there really is no telling if the South Korean dynamo would have been able to influence the game and give the away side more of a chance, especially considering how good Lucas Moura was from the start. As far as the Lilywhites are concerned, though, they should always be making room for Son to start and they’ll be fuming if he’s left out again on Wednesday when they face Crystal Palace in their first true home game since leaving White Hart Lane.

The last thing the Lilywhites needed at 15:30 yesterday was to see that they’d be travelling to Anfield without starting Son, and it certainly didn’t help their pre-match nerves.
