Tottenham fans on Twitter delight as Vertonghen wins Champions League accolade

Tottenham fans on Twitter have been left with absolutely no surprise as the news has broken that Jan Vertonghen has been named the Champions League player of the week. The Belgian’s performance against Borussia Dortmund in the week was well deserving of the accolade and it’s no surprise to see him rewarded for his sensational performance.

There’s no surprise amongst any Tottenham fans that Vertonghen has been given the award and has been recognised for his form. The veteran defender is so often used as a central-defender, yet on Wednesday Mauricio Pochettino mixed it up as he threw in the Belgian as a left-wing-back in a five-man defence. It may have looked defensive, but it worked a treat as Vertonghen shone.

From that starting role at left-wing-back, Vertonghen did multiple jobs. He shut Jadon Sancho up, the Dortmund youngster who had been touted as the German’s biggest threat on the night, as well as managing to get forward and provide both a goal and an assist in a smashing 3-0 home win. The Lilywhites put one foot in the competition’s quarter-finals with the win, and it wouldn’t have happened without Jan Vertonghen.

The Lilywhites loved seeing Vertonghen rewarded for his sublime form in the week and will hope he can back it up with another cracking display away at Dortmund in three weeks.
