Tottenham fans on Twitter delighted for Vertonghen as he ends five-year wait for a goal

Saturday’s 2-1 win over Newcastle United saw a very rare thing happen. Jan Vertonghen ended his five-year wait for a Premier League goal and the supporters are over the moon for their Belgian. The 31-year-old opened the scoring in the 2-1 win at St James Park and he won’t want to wait as long for the next one.

Goals aren’t what Vertonghen is in the side to get but some eagle-eyed fans will be wondering why Vertonghen finds the net so rarely. In his Ajax days, the defender bagged himself 28 goals in 220 games, however, in 33 games more for the Lillywhites Vertonghen has only managed to find the net 11 times, although he has been unlucky with offside decisions and goals going down as own-goals.

The Belgian has the accolade of being the most capped international in his country’s history and the Tottenham fans will be hoping the Belgian wall can stay at his magnificent best for at least a few more years, even if he is reaching the point in his career where he might start to decline. The Spurs fans haven’t seen anything to suggest that might happen yet, though, and the 31-year-old is set to have another fantastic season under Mauricio Pochettino.

Just from this, you can see that the supporters are desperate to see Vertonghen net more recently and will be hoping they don’t have to wait as long until his next goal.
