Tottenham Hotspur may not have been Jonathan Woodgate’s home for very long, but the two and a half seasons that the England international spent with them was special. T defender scored the winner the last time Spurs won silverware, and the Lilywhites have loved looking back at his time at the club and his partnership with Ledley King.

Yesterday was Woodgate’s 39th birthday and it was a day that saw Tottenham pay tribute to him on their Twitter account. The eight-time capped England man had an illustrious career in which he featured for Leeds, Newcastle, Real Madrid, Middlesbrough, Tottenham and Stoke, yet his only piece of silverware came when he was at White Hart Lane.
The Tottenham fans will always look back at Woodgate with fondness for his heroics in that League Cup final back in 2008, and until they can win a trophy then the 39-year-old retains the record of being the most recent Tottenham man to score a winner in a final. Away from that final, though, the defender was a rock. His partnership with Ledley King was something that the Lilywhites absolutely adored, and in their prime, they’d be a tough match for the Lilywhites current defence.
You can read the Lilywhites’ verdict on Woodgate here:
A fully fit Woodgate was different class. You knew if him and King were playing together we could beat anyone.

@LedleyKing and Woodgate. What a fantastic partnership they were. But for injuries would have been England partners too for many years.

Had Woody not suffered the injuries he did in his career. We would be lauding a truly World class defender, had the balls to go abroad when most don’t. As mentioned, when him and Ledley started it was a massive boost to the team.

The Lilywhites will always look back warmly on Woodgate’s time at Spurs, and for good reason considering his cup final heroics.
