Tottenham fans on Twitter thought Champions League dreams were over

Tottenham fans on Twitter thought Champions League dreams were over - Premier League

What a night. What a team. Tottenham Hotspur fans had no right to believe they’d be making it to a Champions League final at half-time last night. Whatever Mauricio Pochettino said at the break worked, however, nine minutes before Lucas Moura’s eventual winner they thought they’d had their last chance through Jan Vertonghen.

The Lilywhites’ dominant Belgian and ex-Ajax star had the ball fall kindly to him from a corner as he headed for a winner. The ball had little on it so the 32-year-old had to generate all the power himself. After what felt like hours of the ball hanging in the air, it crashed back off the crossbar before finding its way back to the Belgian just for his second volleyed effort to be cleared off the line.

It might be easy enough now knowing that after that moment it would take just nine minutes for the Lilywhites to eventually find that crucial 3rd goal through Lucas Moura, but at the time as Vertonghen missed it looked like Mauricio Pochettino’s side’s race had been run. Another nearly moment for the nearly men of Tottenham. Not last night, not on that night, and even if a lot of the fans lost hope, they can now look forward to a Champions League final.

The Lilywhites will be pinching themselves all day after yesterday, but when Vertonghen missed the feeling of desolation was impossible to shake.

Spurs fans, how did you feel when Vertonghen missed that chance? Let us know below…
