Tottenham defender Serge Aurier’s career in north London has never really taken off.
Bought from Paris Saint-Germain in 2017, the Ivorian was always going to find regular game-time hard to come by with England international Kieran Trippier ahead of him in the pecking order.
The 26-year-old is yet to feature for Mauricio Pochettino this season, with 22-year-old Kyle Walker-Peters seemingly the first-choice right-back at the club this season – proven by the fact he has started three of Spurs’ four games thus far (per Transfermarkt).
Centre-back Davinson Sanchez lined-up at right-back during Tottenham’s 2-2 draw with rivals Arsenal prior to the international break, proving that Pochettino has little faith in Aurier, who spent the entire match watching on from the substitutes’ bench.
Sanchez had a far from memorable game against the Gunners and frequently looked out of his depth at full-back – something highlighted by the Evening Standard after the game – which makes Aurier’s exclusion from the team even more baffling.
The ex-PSG man has recently admitted to Bal des Productions (via Goal) that he wanted to leave the club during the summer but couldn’t force through a deal. He also said that there is ‘no competition’ for a space in the starting XI at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
His comments have sparked a reaction among Spurs fans, with many of them having a differing opinion on the 26-year-old.
Lowkey arrogant but should always start when fit
