Tottenham: Frankly, Lucas Moura should start and it shouldn’t even be a question

Tottenham: Frankly, Lucas Moura should start and it shouldn’t even be a question - Premier League

Well, nobody would have expected this when Harry Kane limped off in the Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City. Not even the most ardent Spurs fan, surely. The notion of not starting the England captain in the Champions League final would have been enough to be ridiculed before THAT night in Amsterdam, but it’s exactly what Mauricio Pochettino must do.

Obviously, Moura has stepped up since then and he must start in the final.

Kane has scored 17 goals and made four assists in the Premier League this season, along with bagging five in eight Champions League games. When he’s fit, he’s on fire, so there’s a clear reason why Spurs’ best player should start their biggest game.

It seems like he’ll be fit to play from the off, but, in truth, Moura deserves that spot more than him. It’s not that Kane has done anything not to deserve it, but Moura has dragged the team through the second leg against City and the semi-final against Ajax. Dropping him now would be absolutely crazy.

He’s scored five goals himself in Europe this season, but it’s not just his finishing that’s got Spurs to where they are. Altogether, he adds a new level of dynamism to the front line that meant they could get those goals against City and Ajax on the counter-attack.

Liverpool may not play in the way that those two teams do, but players should be rewarded for their efforts. Think about Jurgen Klopp dropping the excellent Trent Alexander-Arnold for Joe Gomez at the Camp Nou, the Reds clearly don’t overly enjoy playing against such genuine pace. Who does, to be fair?

If Moura doesn’t start the final, that sends the message that, no matter what any player does when Kane isn’t around, they’ll always be a second choice.

Moura has proven he can cope with the big occasion and although it’s a big risk dropping your best player over the last three seasons, Pochettino should trust Moura to deliver just as he has done in the last two rounds. Without him, they’d be out.
