William Gallas arrived at Spurs on a free transfer this season from bitter rivals Arsenal after four trophy-less seasons. The former Gunners captain has started brightly at Tottenham and has become a regular at the heart of the defense due to injuries to the likes of Michael Dawson and Ledley King.
At first I felt maybe he’s passed his best and obviously, he comes from the ‘them’ down the road but as many Spurs fans will say now, he’s becoming one of us. He captained us to a tremendous victory at the Emirates and then a clean sheet at home to Werder Bremen. Harry Redknapp also stated that his tackle on the highly rated German international Marko Marin was reminiscent of the great Bobby Moore’s on Jairzinho.
With our most influential players out in the form of King, Dawson and Tom Huddlestone, Gallas is the obvious choice to take the armband and I certainly believe he has all the credentials needed to become a good captain at the club. Gallas lost the Arsenal armband to Cesc Fabregas in 2008 after openly criticising his players in the media as well as throwing an on-field “paddy” after they conceded a penalty against Birmingham City in the dying minutes.
To me, it shows the players’ desire and his passion to win somebody we need at the club without a doubt. If he continues the way he is playing, gets a few clean sheets under his belt, who knows how far Spurs can go and maybe a contract extension will come his way next Summer?
