Tottenham have plans to replace £16.2m-rated regular in the near future – report

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are hopeful that their side will enjoy a solid second-half of the season. At present, despite impressive form in Europe, their displays back on home turf have been less than ideal – and they’re currently 20 points away from top spot.

Their main goal, though, which is to get into Europe ahead of next season, is well within reach given that they’re currently in 5th place.

It’s obvious, then, that much of Tottenham’s focus will be placed on the present, but according to the Evening Standard, the Lilywhites are also working to ensure long-standing progress too, it seems.

Tom Collomosse of the Evening Standard has recently been discussing Tottenham’s summer plans, and he has provided an interesting tidbit of knowledge regarding Mousa Dembele. Significantly, it is said, Tottenham are in the process of seeking out a long-term replacement for Dembele, who has struggled with injury this term.

James Maddison of Norwich City is mentioned by name at a potential candidate, though it seems clear that the Lilywhites are keeping their options open ahead of what looks to be a very busy summer period.

On the back of a stellar performance from Dembele – who is rated at £16.2 million by Transfer Markt – against Man Utd, the immediate need to replace him might not be apparent, but it’s pretty clear that his career is only going one way. He has spent a decent amount of time over the last year on the injury table, whilst his game time has also been limited in part thanks to the emergence of Harry Winks.

He can still do a job, of course, but long-term, Tottenham need to think about his successor, and that’s exactly what they’re doing.

Landlord’s Verdict

Dembele’s qualities are impressive, and so it won’t be easy to replace him. Possessing fantastic poise, technical ability, hard work and strength, the Belgian is a real force through the midfield.

James Maddison has impressed this year, but it’s too soon to say that he’s the real deal. Tottenham, then, will be spending the next few months assessing him, among other options, as they make to look a decision – perhaps in the summer.
