Heung-min Son’s red card for Tottenham against Everton (per BBC Sport), following a tackle that left Andre Gomes with a horrific injury, will be appealed by the north London club.
The Evening Standard report that Son’s dismissal will be challenged after the South Korean international was shown a straight red card by referee Martin Atkinson. The attacker’s tackle on the Everton midfielder saw Gomes propel into Serge Aurier, causing the Portuguese international to suffer an awful ankle injury.
As Sky Sports News report, Tottenham are allowed to appeal Son’s red card as it was a straight sending off, unlike a second bookable offence, which cannot be challenged.
The events on Sunday night were horrific to see in terms of Gomes’ grim injury overall as well as Son’s reaction to the damage he had seemingly done on the former Barcelona midfielder.
The Tottenham attacker looked physically distraught as he walked off the pitch in tears, with the Daily Mail now reporting that Son will be offered psychological support from the club to help him through this difficult time.
Will Dele Alli rediscover his best form this season?
Yet despite the seriousness of the injury Gomes has been left with and how emotionally broken Son looked following the tackle, the winger’s red card could be overturned.
As photos from the game via Sky Sports News show, Atkinson had originally planned to give Son a yellow card for his challenge on Gomes, though it appears the experienced Premier League referee changed his mind after seeing the severity of the Everton midfielder’s injury.
The magnitude of Gomes’ injury could have a prolonged effect on Son’s mental state for the upcoming weeks. Bearing that in mind, you could understand if Mauricio Pochettino took the South Korean superstar out of the firing line for the next Premier League fixture anyway, should the Tottenham attacker’s red card be overturned.
And considering everything, it would not be a surprise to see that happen. After all, Atkinson had the intention of handing Son a yellow card for the initial challenge before seeing the horrific state Gomes was in, and how that played out could be used in favour of the Spurs number 7.
