With Hugo Lloris out for four weeks, Tottenham fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern were keen for their side to bring in some more goalkeeping depth before the August 31st deadline – but it might be too late…
Mauricio Pochettino will have hoped to start the 2016/17 season with a goalkeeping depth good enough to rival any other side in the Premier League, but he didn’t bank on an opening day injury to first choice keeper Hugo Lloris.
Our landlord has put the injury down to the Lloris’ lack of fitness, with the keeper missing the majority of Tottenham’s pre-season after making it to the final of the Euro 2016 this summer with his native France.
Either way, with Lloris an injury doubt until the middle of September – the majority of the punters here in the Football Transfer Tavern were convinced that Mauricio Pochettino would dip back into the transfer market in search of a short-term replacement.
Sky Sports have reported that Pochettino is interested in doing just that, with Espanyol’s 21-year-old goalkeeper Pau Lopez a reported target for the London side.
Since that news was reported, nobody here in the Tavern has been able to agree on how Spurs’ purported interest in the goalkeeper might end.
Now, three days later – the picture on the transfer appears much clearer. According to the Evening Standard, Spurs have made two separate bids for the Spanish shot stopper – both of which have been rejected.
The Evening Standard also provided reported details on the terms of both bids – one was reportedly a £3 million bid for a permanent move, whilst a £450,000 one-year loan move was also turned down by Espanyol.
Lopez has been with Espanyol for his entire career thus far, beginning with the club’s youth system in 2007, before receiving a promotion to the Espanyol B team in 2013 and subsequently the club’s first-team one year later.
Currently 21-years-old, our landlord has suggested that Lopez is likely a signing with the future in mind, perhaps as an eventual Lloris replacement – with Tottenham’s current number 1 turning 30-years-old at the end of the year.
Despite his tender years, Lopez is building quite the portfolio with his boyhood club, quickly establishing himself in the side’s first team – eventually making an impressive 36 league appearances last season.
A relatively unknown name in England, Lopez found himself a big talking point in the Football Transfer Tavern last season, after a video emerged of the La Liga keeper seemingly stamping on Lionel Messi during a game between Barcelona and Espanyol last season. See that clip below…
Lopez looks like an impressive keeper, but the Messi incident certainly suggests that he can be a bit brash – Pochettino will definitely have to work on that if he does make the move to North London.
Tottenham fans – what do you think? Does Lopez fit the bill? Does the Messi incident worry you? Where can you see him fitting in?
