After a summer spent recruiting new talent, the Tottenham faithful here in the Football Transfer Tavern are eager for Mauricio Pochettino to hang on to what he’s already got…
Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko headlined the wave of new recruits brought to White Hart Lane this summer, and it doesn’t look like Mauricio Pochettino is going to stop there.
New signings are always the headline act, but our landlord has always valued the retention of current first team players above bringing in new talent.
This is especially true with Tottenham, with the London-based side enjoying a stellar campaign last year – coming within inches of a title win against underdogs Leicester City.
The Tottenham fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern are absolutely delighted with the form of some of Spurs’ key players – and it will no doubt please them to hear that the club are working on securing a number of them to new deals as soon as possible.
The Evening Standard is reporting that Christian Eriksen is the closest to agreeing a new deal with the club, with the midfielder set for a bumper new four-year-deal.
This is particularly significant, given that Eriksen was linked with a move away from the club on more than one occasion throughout the summer – with a contract issue the motivating factor behind the rumours.
The good news does not stop there for the Tottenham faithful either, with the club also reportedly working on new deals for key men Erik Lamela and Jan Vertonghen.
A new deal for Erik Lamela, in particular, will please the Tottenham faithful here in the Tavern, with the Argentine midfielder building quite the reputation in the Tavern last season following on from his stellar performances throughout the 2015/16 campaign.
Jan Vertonghen is another key Spurs star, and has become a real marshal at the heart of the Everton defence.
The Tottenham defence was absolutely unstoppable last season; and Vertonghen was an absolutely vital part of that.
With Tottenham likely to bid for a second title challenge this season, our landlord thinks that it is absolutely vital that they secure their most important players down to long-term deals; and that is seemingly exactly what Mauricio Pochettino wants to do.
Our bar staff are expecting more of this from Spurs this season…
Tottenham fans – excited about this season? How important could these reported new deals be?
