Tottenham Hotspur: Jan Vertonghen wants new deal

Jan Vertonghen wants to sign a new deal at Tottenham Hotspur and extend his stay at the club, according to a report by Football Insider.

The Belgium international has already entered the final 12 months of his current contract, however, it is believed he wants to stay at the club beyond next summer

The 32-year-old is believed to be eager for an extension and wants to open talks with Spurs about what would, potentially, be an additional year.

Vertonghen has been a key and prominent figure for Mauricio Pochettino’s side as he enters his eighth year with the north London outfit.

Despite being out of the team at the beginning of the current campaign, the experienced Belgian has featured in 286 matches for Spurs, scoring 12 goals and providing six assists in that time (Transfermarkt).

According to data collected by WhoScored, there could perhaps be an argument that the veteran is on the decline, although the fact that he is not getting any younger could be a rather obvious factor, he has also played fewer games in the top flight than usual in the previous campaign.

Last season, in 22 Premier League appearances, Vertonghen managed to achieve a respectable average of 1.8 tackles, 1.5 interceptions and 3.3 clearances in the three defensive categories. In the 2017/18 campaign, he achieved an excellent average of 1.8 tackles, 1.7 interceptions and 4.7 clearances in his 36 matches.

However, the 2016/17 season was perhaps his best in a Tottenham shirt as the Belgian centre-back managed to record some remarkable defensive figures. The 32-year-old was outstanding at the back as he achieved 1.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and seven clearances in 33 appearances.

It would certainly be a smart piece of business by Tottenham to act swiftly on the experienced centre-half’s desire to sign a new contract for a couple of different reasons.

Obviously, a new deal would mean that the 32-year-old would no longer be available to other clubs on a free transfer, whilst he has proven to be rather instrumental for the north London outfit at the back over the years.

There had been concerns that Vertonghen had fallen out with Pochettino recently, however, those rumours had been quashed by the defender (The Mirror) and that would appear to ring true with the developments that he is keen on extending his stay at Spurs.
