Tottenham fans are shocked in the Football Transfer Tavern as the London Evening Standard revealed that their midfielder, Paulinho, nearly quit White Hart Lane in January due to ‘bad moments’ earlier this season.
It has been a tough season for the Brazilian under Mauricio Pochettino having been rarely used by the Spurs boss.
His frequent omission from the first team led to him considering options from Spain and Italy, before ultimately deciding to stay in North London.
In fact, it took until January 31st for him to start his first Premier League game when they beat West Brom 3-0.
“There were bad moments in the beginning of the season. I was not in the starting line-up very often and sometimes not even on the bench,” Paulinho said.
“But I kept doing my job and now I’m having more opportunities and playing more.
“I was close to leaving the club during last transfer window. There were some offers made to my agent and I can confirm I was close to leaving. I had some offers from Europe and Brazil. Adaptation [to a different club] is not an issue anymore.
“It would have been easy in another European club and Brazil is my home, so there would have been no problems there, either.
“But when you receive an offer you have to consider the bigger picture. I have a family, wife, daughter and a new baby coming. One must think a lot before taking any decision.”
The near future is not so bleak and maybe choosing to stay at Spurs was the right choice.
Because Pochettino will undoubtedly have to call on the midfielder as Tottenham are in the middle of a run of six games in 17 days.
And with squad rotation a given, it hands Paulinho the opportunity to impress and prove his worth in the side.
