Despite what seems like a matter of urgency ahead of the north London derby, Tottenham Hotspur still might not turn to Serge Aurier to fill the problem at right-back, according to a report by The Guardian.
With Kyle Walker-Peters ruled out of contention with a hamstring injury and Juan Foyth still unavailable, it would have seemed the ideal opportunity for the Ivorian to get his chance and grab it with both hands.
However, it seems Mauricio Pochettino could be prepared to try and find a makeshift alternative in either Moussa Sissoko or Eric Dier for the clash with fierce rivals Arsenal at the weekend.
It is claimed Tottenham are open to selling Aurier whilst the European transfer window remains open, so there may be an unwillingness at jeopardising their chances of offloading him before Monday’s deadline.
As The Guardian suggests, Aurier is clearly in danger of becoming the forgotten man at Spurs and if he is not handed the opportunity to play against Arsenal despite the apparent need for a right-back, it would appear the lights on his career at Tottenham have gone out.
The Ivorian is yet to make an appearance for Spurs this season and did not even make the matchday squad for their trip to Manchester City or their home defeat to Newcastle United. In fact, the international’s last appearance came over five months ago, when he played in their Champions League victory over Borussia Dortmund at the beginning of March.
Pochettino is believed to have grown fed up with how things had been developing regarding Aurier as well last season, as reports had circulated before the end of the season suggesting that the Argentine would look to offload him this summer (The Sun), which seems to back up the idea that he is open to the idea of moving him on still.
With players like Sissoko or Dier being lined up as potential right-back options for their match against Arsenal (in what, arguably, is the club’s most competitive fixture of the campaign each year) as preferred options, the writing certainly looks to be on the wall for the 26-year-old.
The future looks pretty bleak for Aurier and his time at Tottenham, and it would not be difficult to imagine that it would be all over if he is not selected for the game against Arsenal at the weekend.
There is obviously something that Pochettino does not like/trust about the Ivorian’s game and his ability, otherwise, with the apparent need for a right-back, one would have to feel as though he would have been a no-brainer and gone straight into the team.
Should he not be selected, it would not be a surprise to see him be moved on ahead of the deadline.
