Tottenham Hotspur: Tim Sherwood believes Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen could move to China

Tim Sherwood has suggested both Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen could look to make a move to China next summer.

Both Belgian centre-backs are out of contract at the end of June and there has been some doubt as to whether either would be committing their future to the club beyond the current campaign.

Vertonghen has revealed he is in no rush to sign a new deal (Express) whilst Alderweireld is thought to be prepared to run it out (Mirror).

Spurs are understood to have tried to tie both men down to new deals, however there is still some real concern that they could cast their eyes elsewhere, something that Sherwood appears to believe is a real possibility.

Speaking on the most recent episode of The Debate on Sky Sports (via Twitter), the former Tottenham midfielder stated the duo could look to the Far East as a way of earning a final big payday as they approach the later stages of their careers.

He said: “Alderweireld looks like he’s going to move and at 30 years of age, and Vertonghen at 32, it’s probably the last time they are going to fill the till up.

“It’s a short career they need to do that, perhaps [they could move to] China. Chinese clubs don’t take defenders very often, but they are probably waiting for that big one to come.”

Losing both defenders on free transfers would be a huge blow for Tottenham and it is surely something the club can not afford to do either.

Vertonghen has been a mainstay for Mauricio Pochettino’s side over the years as he has made 286 appearances during his time for the north London outfit, however he appears to have been on the periphery for the Argentine so far in the current campaign with just one appearance (Transfermarkt).

Alderweireld has been a key figure this season for the club though, as he has played in all four Premier League matches so far this season, achieving an average of 3.8 clearances, one tackle and 0.8 interceptions every 90 minutes (WhoScored).

Whether either man will decide to seek a move to China remains to be seen, however Sherwood’s comments ring true – maybe they will look for a big paycheck elsewhere as they reach their twilight years, which would surely leave Tottenham in some trouble next summer.
