Toby Alderweireld could be ready to extend his stay at Tottenham Hotspur, according to a report by Football Insider.
It is claimed the Belgium international is ready to sign an extension to his current deal, which expires in the summer.
It has been revealed that there is a growing confidence within the club that the defender is prepared to sign a contract worth £120,000-a-week – a figure that would allegedly double his current earnings at Spurs.
It would be a solid piece of business if Tottenham were able to keep Alderweireld at the club beyond next summer as he has proven to be an instrumental component of Mauricio Pochettino’s side over the last five years.
Despite being dropped by the manager at the beginning of 2018 – which led to assumptions being made about his refusal to sign a new deal then – the experienced enforcer has gone on to show exactly why he has become a mainstay in the team ever since.
According to the Premier League data collected by WhoScored, the 30-year-old managed to achieve an average of 1.1 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 4.9 clearances (where he led the charts) in his 34 appearances in 2018/19. The defender also helped Spurs reach the Champions League final last season, as he recorded 0.9 tackles, one interception and 3.6 clearances per 90 minutes.
Indeed, Alderweireld has also started this season in fine form as well, having amassed one tackle, one interception and 2.7 clearances in his three top-flight appearances so far – as he and Davinson Sanchez appear to be striking up a central-defensive partnership at the back for Tottenham.
Spurs, arguably, seem to be in a rather fortunate position in being able to have a confidence in giving the defender a new deal as well. The Belgian was believed to have been available to other clubs this summer for a rather measly £25m because of a release clause in his current contract, but it would appear no one was willing to take advantage of the situation.
As mentioned, it would be a brilliant piece of business by Spurs if they were able to tie Alderweireld down to a new contract and keep him at the club beyond the end of the season.
The 30-year-old has continued to play an important role for Pochettino’s side and looks, once again, to be a key member of the defence, especially as Jan Vertonghen continues to be mysteriously left out by the manager – although there are suggestions he is facing the same saga that his compatriot went through 18 months or so ago.
