Tottenham Hotspur: Troy Deeney condemns criticism of Spurs’ style of play - Premier League

Speaking recently on talkSPORT, Watford striker Troy Deeney stated his belief that Tottenham Hotspur should be praised for their style of football, rather than criticised.

Following Tottenham’s 2-0 victory over north London rivals Arsenal on Sunday, Deeney heaped praise on Jose Mourinho’s side for their counter-attacking style of football, suggesting that, while some of their games may not be overly easy on the eye, the 57-year-old’s tactical setup at Spurs should not be considered as negative.

Can you name these 10 former Spurs stars? Let's get started! Who is this?

In the fixture itself, a stunning finish from Son Heung-min and an almost (but not quite) equally impressive strike from Harry Kane saw Spurs take all three points from Mikel Arteta’s side, despite the fact that Arsenal had a far larger share of possession, more shots and more corners in the match, per BBC.

However, speaking to talkSPORT Breakfast, the 32-year-old Deeney said: “Style of play is always an interesting opinion to have because it’s always based on what you prefer as an individual to watch. They’re always going to give you the ball at the false pretence that you’re in control. And that’s what they did for the goals.

“I liked the way that they played. When Son is going through for that goal that’s two passes and then he scored a worldie into the top corner. That’s very good football. It doesn’t always have to be 47 passes from the goalkeeper, the third man runs and scores… there’s so many ways to play football and that’s why we love it and we’ve got this job to talk about it.

“I can’t believe we’re talking about this. Spurs are top of the table and we’re now going, ‘let’s find something to talk about’. They’ve had three shots on target, scored two, won the derby and in my opinion looked comfortable.”

Do you think that Tottenham's football is boring?

Deeney’s comments come following criticism of the tactical setup of Spurs, and considering the fact that Tottenham have kept three consecutive clean sheets against the likes of Manchester City, Chelsea and now Arsenal, and currently sit top of the Premier League table, it is difficult to imagine Spurs fans or Mourinho having any issue with the style of play.
