The Football Transfer Tavern is quiet today as punters reflect on a busy weekend in the bar.
However there has been a stir in the bar as Paul Brown from the Daily Star reports that Tottenham are considering a move for Valencia defender Jeremy Mathieu as they prepare to lose Jan Vertonghen in the summer.
There are growing concerns among staff at White Hart Lane that the Belgian international could leave if Tim Sherwood’s side fail to qualify for the Champions League.
He even hinted as much in a recent interview and is believed to be one of the many central defenders being monitored for a possible switch to Barcelona as the La Liga giants attempt to replace Carles Puyol.
Other targets include Chelsea’s David Luiz and Liverpool’s Daniel Agger but here in the tavern we reckon that Vertonghen would be top of their wishlist.
Now Brown explains that Spurs are planning a contingency plan if the 26-year-old decides to leave and Mathieu, 30, is understood to be near the top of the White Hart Lane’s wishlist.
The French international, who can also slot in at left back, has been scouted several times by Spurs in recent weeks with the Lilywhites plotting a £17 million summer move.
Valencia have had a tough season in La Liga and that could see them selling their stars in the post-season with Spurs given hope for his services in the summer.
Do you think that the Belgian defender will be departing in the summer? Would the Valencia man be a suitable replacement? Let us know your thoughts below.
