Adding a defensive midfielder to the ranks must surely be a priority for Tottenham Hotspur this summer, right? Given that Victor Wanyama’s future remains in doubt and Moussa Dembele is no longer at the club, Mauricio Pochettino will not have too many options to call upon next season.
And, it appears that Spurs have a highly-rated individual on their radar as a possible replacement for the aforementioned duo.
What’s the News?
According to a report by Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), Tottenham have been ‘knocking at the door for months’ for Soualhio Meite.
The 25-year-old has been excelling in his debut season for Torino and it would appear that Spurs, as well as West Ham United, are understood to want to bring him to the Premier League.
It is claimed that he is valued at around €25-€30million (£21.3m-£25.6m), although the Serie A outfit are unlikely going to want to sell him after the campaign that he has had so far.
Meite is an excellent player and one that would certainly help Tottenham to replace Dembele and Wanayama (should he be offloaded) this summer.
The 25-year-old is exceptionally strong and physically imposing, whilst he also has the ability to protect the backline as he is an excellent tackler.
However, he would also fit the mould of Dembele in regards to the way that he goes forward with the ball. The former France Youth international is more than capable of running with the ball at his feet, whilst he can pick out a pass with some fine distribution.
Meite is extremely hardworking and tenacious in the middle of the field and has a really good ability to break up the play, although his aggression is something that can be a worry at times as he can pick up yellow cards on a fairly regular basis.
With a lack of strong midfielders in front of the backline at the moment, Spurs must seriously consider bringing the 25-year-old to the club. And, with a valuation thought to be between £21.3m and £25.6m, it would not necessarily be a too expensive one for them to make this summer.
Tottenham fans, what do you make of Meite? Does he sound like the type of player Spurs needs this summer? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
