Tottenham supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in recent days after seeing their side end a memorable week with victory over Crystal Palace at Wembley, a result which moved them level on points with Manchester United in the Premier League table.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men may well have begun the week with a 1-0 loss to the Red Devils, but they put that behind them admirably with a wonderful 3-1 victory over European champions Real Madrid in midweek, a result which booked their place in the last 16 of the Champions League. And although they didn’t produce their best form against Roy Hodgson’s Palace on Sunday, they got the all important three points thanks to an excellent strike from Son Heung-min midway through the second half.
Thus, there have been several happy Spurs fans in the Tavern this week, and they may be further encouraged by a recent report from The Daily Mail, which suggests that the North London outfit have joined the race for Hamburg sensation Jann-Fiete Arp.
The 17-year-old striker came up through the youth ranks at the Bundesliga outfit to make his senior debut for the club little over a month ago, coming on as a late substitute in their 0-0 draw with Werder Bremen on September 30.
And he has since then featured twice more for the German side and bagged goals in each game in defeat to Hertha Berlin and victory over Stuttgart, thus underlining his credentials in front of goal as well as his huge future in the game.
And the Germany Under-17 international has unsurprisingly attracted interest from clubs in England, notably Arsenal and Chelsea, and reports suggest that Pochettino’s Tottenham have also joined the chase for the starlet.
But whether they can beat the aforementioned Premier League duo, as well as Juventus, to Arp’s signature very much remains to be seen.
Landlord’s verdict: Mauricio Pochettino has been a revelation since moving to the Premier League, first with Southampton and now with Tottenham, and one of his best traits is that he is always willing to give youngsters a chance.
The likes of Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Harry Kane, and most recently Harry Winks have all flourished under the Argentine since he took over at Spurs, and that will surely be of interest to Jann-Fiete Arp and his representatives when weighing up his next career move.
The 17-year-old has burst onto the scene with Hamburg in the last few months and as such he is attracting interest from around Europe, with Spurs set to rivals Arsenal, Chelsea, and Juventus for his signature.
But having Pochettino as manager and as such the greater chance of first team football could well sway the German to sign for Spurs in the coming transfer windows.
