Tottenham join race for in-demand midfielder as Pochettino considers January move – report

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are hoping that their side will be able to bring in a player or two this month. A top-four finish is still the goal for the club, and the addition of a few talented new players will serve to improve the chances of that happening.

It’s come as a boost to our resident Lilywhites, then, to learn that according to Belgian outlet HLN, Tottenham are among those interested in a move for in-demand midfielder Giorgi Chakvetadze. His current side, AA Gent, are said to be unwilling to sell him – but the likes of Bayern Munich, Tottenham and Bournemouth are all said to be keen to land him, with an offer of around €6 million (£5.3 million) ready to be made by the Lilywhites.

Chakvetadze has made just 3 appearances for AA Gent since moving to the club, with 2 of those coming in domestic cup competition. He’s yet to hold down a spot in the first team, though, which has concerned our resident Lilywhites.

He plays as an attacking midfielder, offering a decent threat particularly down the flanks and also through the middle.

Landlord’s Verdict

This is a strange one.

Chakvetadze has hardly set the world alight since moving to AA Gent, and given how much of a step up it would be to play in the Premier League, the chances of him having a role in the Spurs first team this season appear to be low.

That being said, Mauricio Pochettino has plucked a number of youngsters from obscurity in recent years, notably Dele Alli, and turned them into superstars. With Alli, in particular, nobody gave him a chance of making an immediate impact, but that’s exactly what he did when he returned from a loan spell after joining the club.

He’s unproven, but Pochettino has made a living out of turning unproven stars into top-tier players.
