The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern have been discussing a handful of potential replacements for Mousa Dembele whilst the Belgian’s future remains in serious doubt, and murmurs from France suggest his natural successor is beginning to make his name in Europe.
Very little was know about Tanguy NDombele when he made a transfer from SC Amiens to Olympique Lyon on a season long loan deal last summer, but his performances for the French giants have raised plenty of eyebrows in France. The 21-year-old midfielder has been in excellent form in central midfield where he has been allowed to showcase the full extent of his flair and tenacity.
Recent comments made by Mousa Dembele’s agent suggest that his future hangs in the balance and that he will be open to offers from outside Tottenham Hotspur this summer, so Mauricio Pochettino would be wise to begin planning for life after the Belgian. Adding NDombele (valued at £22.5 million by Transfermarkt) to his shortlist would be a wise place to start, as there are plenty of parallels to be drawn between the two players.
Like Dembele, the French youngster possesses a reassuring level of composure in high-pressure situations along with the technical ability to play his way out of trouble; Ndombele can regularly be seen using skill, trickery and vision to manoeuvre out of a tight situation before stepping forward with purpose and power down the centre of the pitch.
Although Amiens’ rising star would undoubtedly need plenty of time to adapt to the Premier League, there’s no doubt that he possesses the potential to become one of the best midfield players on the continent and even exceed the standard set by Dembele.
With 8 assists to his name during his loan spell with Lyon, Ndombele has proven that he has the end-product to match his build-up player – something which Dembele failed to prove last season as he failed to provide a single goal or assist from 39 appearances in all-competitions.
Plenty of the Lilywhites faithful will be saddened by Dembele’s departure if he eventually decides to leave North London this summer, but their disappointment should not last too long if Pochettino can replace him with a player who represents a perfect long-term upgrade in NDombele.
