Tottenham landing £40.5m-rated wonderkid would end Erik Lamela’s career in North London

The Tottenham Hotspur fans in the Transfer Tavern are content with their plethora of attacking midfield options, but recent reports suggest Mauricio Pochettino is eager to add one of Europe’s most sought-after wonderkids to his squad this summer.

According to reports in Calcio Insider, Tottenham are ready to meet Borussia Dortmund’s asking price for the America international Christian Pulisic this summer. Pulisic has been attracting plenty of interest among Europe’s heavyweight clubs in the past two seasons due to his development at both club and international level.

At just 19-years-of-age, Pulisic (valued at £40.5 million by Transfermarkt) has established himself as a first-team regular for Dortmund on the right-side of their attacking midfield trio and earned 20 caps for his country, scoring 9 goals in the process. With blistering pace, quick-feet and versatility to bring to the table, it’s no surprise that Tottenham are taking a keen interest in a player who appears destined to become a future superstar in European football.

Tottenham’s interest is certainly well placed, but with Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela already on their ranks, it’s likely that the latter will be forced to make way for Pulisic. Unfortunately for the Argentina international, the classic ‘last one in first one out’ philosophy does not particularly apply to football, and in this case the most recent player to join the club, namely Lucas, would remain at the club over Lamela.

But Lamela’s departure may not necessarily arrive as a result of Pochettino forcing him out of the club, as his personal desire to play regular first-team football would force him to embark on a new challenge. It’s clear from Lamela’s passion and determination on the field of play that he genuinely loves playing for Spurs, but in the best interests of his career he is likely to leave the club following Pulisic’s arrival.

Securing the signature of Pulisic would represent a genuine statement of intent for the future at Tottenham as the club enter a watershed moment with the imminent stadium move on the horizon, however, Lamela will almost certainly become a casualty of their audacious foray into the transfer market if they are successful in their pursuit.
