Punters in the Football Transfer Tavern are sitting up and taking notice after the Daily Mail claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race to land Christian Benteke in the summer, yet are set to face stiff competition if they wish to bring the Belgian to White Hart Lane.
Benteke has been one of, if not the only bright light for Aston Villa this season and has shown exactly why he is rated so highly netting more goals than anyone would have expected. The player has been somewhat of a revalation this season and at only 23 years of age it is easy to see just why so many clubs are after him.
The Belgian international is strong, powerful and has a brilliant eye for goal and is being tracked not only by Andre Villas-Boas’ side but also Inter Milan and Manchester City. Roberto Mancini’s men have of course lost Mario Balotelli and rumours are flying around surrounding a potential Edin Dzeko exit could well mean the Citizens are after more than one new forward in the summer.
For their part, Spurs are willing to let Emmanuel Adebayor go in the summer and with the prospect of Champions League football looking even more likely, a top class striker will be a must. Should Villa get relegated Benteke will almost certainly leave with Champions League football a much more appealing prospect than that of the Championship!
Can Tottenham beat their transfer rivals to the signature of Benteke? Rate this rumour below.
