I was down in the cellar grabbing a few kegs and when I came back upstairs to the Football Transfer Tavern it was silent, I mean you could literally hear a pin drop.
I was worried; the tavern was full of punters but no one was making a sound.
Then I noticed that Steve Bates, of the Sunday People, was in and he always comes in with the most amazing (if not believable) transfer news.
I managed to coax a few words out of a nearby (and shellshocked) punter who mumbled to me that Steve had just told them that Tottenham Hotspur are planning an audacious move for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.
Andre Villas-Boas is beginning to accept that Gareth Bale will be leaving this transfer window and doesn’t want the winger’s departure/saga to cast a shadow over Tottenham’s early season form, like what happened when Luka Modric left for Real Madrid.
The atmosphere is slowly building again and I overhear people discussing: ‘What does this mean for Arsenal?’ ‘Imagine Soldado and Suarez playing together’ ‘But Spurs can’t offer Champions League football’ and my personal favourite ‘It’s okay, we have Yaya Sanogo’.
If you can, get yourself down the Football Transfer Tavern now because this evening is only just beginning and this is quite possibly the biggest story of the summer, so far.
