So here we are on Transfer Deadline Day and amongst all the stories ranging from the unexpected (Liverpool offering Newcastle 30 million for Carroll) to the inevitable (Spurs being linked with….everyone), here’s a nice little ‘one that got away’ offering from Ligue 1.
St. Etienne striker Dimitri Payet has been linked with a number of English clubs, including Liverpool and Spurs, but it looked as though Chelsea were about to make a bid for the highly rated Frenchman. The French newspaper, L’Equipe, who broke the story over the weekend, claimed it would take 10 million Euros to tempt chairman Roland Romeyer into the sale.
However, it would seem that the offer either never came, or Payet had other ideas, because now the player is reportedly very close to signing for French giants PSG. Apparently, contract negotiations with St. Etienne had stalled and Payet has been getting restless. He was quoted as saying ‘I’m disappointed with the official’s behaviour towards me, so now I’ve made my choice. I want to join PSG to achieve my objective of playing at Euro 2012.’
With Chelsea apparently so close to signing Torres, this might not prove to be too big a loss for the Blues. However, it’s been reported that Bolton are making a move for Daniel Sturridge. Would the loss of cover for Didier Drogba force the Londoner’s to make a large bid for Payet? Nothing’s been tied up with PSG yet, so we could still see a late, late move.
