Tottenham make shock £23m bid for La Liga forward

MartinezTottenham Hotspur fans enjoying brunch in the Transfer Tavern today were pleasantly surprised by reports of a big bid made by their club, with Mauricio Pochettino searching for the perfect partner for Harry Kane.

The Daily Express claim Spurs have made a £23m offer for Atletico Madrid forward Jackson Martinez, who only signed for the La Liga side in the summer but has struggled to replicate the form he showed at Porto.

Spurs’ offer is slightly less than the figure Atletico paid in the summer and it’s suggested Diego Simeone is keen to offload, with Martinez struggling to make an impact and Atletico having plenty of depth in attack- boasting the likes of Antoine Griezmann and Luciano Vietto.

With just three goals for his new side, Martinez is a rare transfer flop for Atletico and Mauricio Pochettino is prepared to offer him a fresh chance as a move for West Brom’s Saido Berahino seems increasingly unlikely to go ahead.

Martinez had previously attracted the interest of a vast number of top sides in European football and the experienced Colombian could be the perfect part for Harry Kane, with the duo capable of firing Spurs into Champions League football.

Our landlord believes this is a very good price for Martinez, having seen the figure West Brom want for Berahino rise to around the £18m mark.
