When Andre Gomes moved to Everton over the summer, it was unclear as to whether he’d be able to make an impact in England. He had previously struggled in Spain, and that had made a significant dent in his reputation across Europe.
Still, the Toffees chose to take a punt – and what a punt it has proven to be.
Gomes has proven to one of the smartest signings of the season, having been one of the standout players at Everton this term. He’s helped to control a midfield that has lacked composure over the last few weeks, and he’s constantly involved in everything positive that Everton have done this season.
Offensively, he’s able to control games with his brilliant range of passing and mobility, and so he’s become a playmaker in the heart of the midfield. Defensively, however, he’s just as useful. His awareness is brilliant, and he’s able to break up play and move it forward with ease. Not known for his physicality, he’s been more than able to adjust to the strong nature of the English top flight.
However, his form shouldn’t just get Everton excited, a few other clubs should also be keen, and one such team is Tottenham.
Tottenham lack midfield depth at present, and Gomes would be a brilliant acquisition. He’d be perfect in Mauricio Pochettino’s technical team, whilst he’d also add some much-needed height and physicality to the squad.
With Mousa Dembele struggling with injury problems, Eric Dier lacking consistency and Tottenham’s midfield more generally no longer as dominant as it once was, the Lilywhites could really do with a player like Gomes. Significantly, he’s already got bags of experience for club and country, and so moving to a club like Spurs would be a natural step.
A January deal is very unlikely, given his loan status, but at the end of the season – anything goes. Tottenham must, at the very least, consider a move.
