Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are starting to get anxious over the lack of transfer activity in North London.
There may no sign of new arrivals at White Hart Lane, but our punters are relieved that Mauricio Pochettino has committed his future to the club. Despite penning a new contract, the Argentine was linked to Real Madrid following Zinedine Zidane’s departure. Madrid have since dropped their interest to pursue other targets.
Pochettino must now look to get Spurs’ business kickstarted with the transfer window closing on August 9th before the Premier League season gets underway. To compete with Manchester City for the title, there is plenty of work to be done. With Mousa Dembele, a mainstay in the Spurs midfield, apparently on the verge of an exit – he must be replaced.
The ideal candidate would be Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder – Ruben Neves. Valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, the Portuguese shocked the world when swapping FC Porto for the Championship last summer. Unsurprisingly, Neves was one of the stars of the season as Wolves lifted the Championship title to earn promotion to the Premier League.
He is regarded as one of Europe’s brightest talents and showcased his ability at Molineux last season, scoring some ridiculous long-range goals and spraying passes to his team-mates. The midfielder is still only 21-years-old meaning he would be a long-term option in the centre of midfield.
Neves can dictate the tempo of the game and allow the likes of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen to flourish ahead of him. Toby Alderweireld’s passing from the back will be missed if he leaves, but Neves is more than capable of dropping deep to create.
A lack of experience at the highest level if his only downfall. However, under Pochettino’s guidance, he could follow in the footsteps of Alli and become a world-class player.
