The race for Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke appears to be hotting up in the Football Transfer Tavern as Mirror Football suggest that Tottenham have stolen a march on their rivals by offering a cash plus player exchange deal.
According to the publication, Spurs have offered England international Jermain Defoe to Aston Villa to help secure the impressive Belgian international. Defoe, 30, is understood to be surplus to requirements at White Hart Lane and they are prepared to offload the striker this summer although is thought that Villa have so far rejected the proposals as they look for Benteke to pen a new deal.
The 22-year-old, who netted 19 times during his debut Premier League campaign, is also a target for Liverpool and Arsenal while Spanish side Atletico Madrid are ready to make a massive £25 millin bid for him as they look to replace Colombian superstar Radamel Falcao this summer.
However Spurs hope that offering Defoe, who hit 19 goals in all competitions last year, as part of the deal will be the sweetener that ensures Benteke will playing his football at White Hart Lane next season. Defoe only signed a three-year deal last summer and this proposed deal is sure to leave him stunned.
