Tottenham fans in the Football Transfer Tavern have grown frustrated with the fact this transfer window has centred around keeping their top players rather than signing new ones.
And the Daily Mail reports the club are ready to offer a new contract to Jan Vertonghen who is said to be a target for Spanish giants Barcelona.
The Belgian defender is currently enjoying a post-World Cup holiday and is expected to make a decision on his future upon his return.
Vertonghen has two years left to run on his current contract and preliminary talks over an extension have started with Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy keen to warn off potential buyers.
Spurs tied French international goalkeeper Hugo Lloris down to a new long-term contract last week and hope an offer of an increase on Vertonghen’s £45,000-a-week wages will convince him to do the same.
Lloris signed a new five-year deal at White Hart Lane and Vertonghen will be offered a contract of the same length.
The versatile defender joined the club from Ajax in 2012 and has gone on to establish himself as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, not to mention a Lilywhites fans favourite.
Tottenham fans. Do you genuinely think you can hang onto Vertonghen this summer? Or will he move to a club capable of offering Champions League football? Let us know your thoughts below.
