Toby Alderweireld has been a key figure for Tottenham Hotspur this season as he has been a mainstay in Mauricio Pochettino’s side and has helped them to reach a Champions League semi-final.
Doubts over his future continue to remain, however, it appears Spurs have not given up on trying to convince him that it is in north London and will look to do all they can to keep him beyond the summer.
What’s the News?
According to a report by Football Insider, Tottenham are prepared to re-open contract negotiations with Alderwiereld to try and keep the defender at the club.
The Belgium international is thought to have a £26million release clause in his present deal that will come into effect in the next transfer window and Spurs are determined to avoid losing him for such a cut-price.
It should hardly come as a surprise to hear that Tottenham are going to do all they can to convince Alderwiereld to commit his future to the club and avoid the alleged £26m clause this summer.
The 30-year-old has been a standout for Spurs and Pochettino this season, despite his future being far from clear and looking far from rosy just 12 months ago as he was immediately dropped from the side following their contract disputes.
He has been a mainstay in the side this season as he helped them to another Premier League title charge, whilst his performances in the Champions League have helped the north London outfit secure a place in the semi-finals against his former club, Ajax.
However, whether that will have been enough to convince the Belgium international to sign a new long-term deal remains to be seen, as does whether Spurs will be able to come to an agreement with Alderweireld’s demands should he be happy enough to sign a new contract.
