Tottenham receive some good news ahead of derby clash against West Ham

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are desperate for their side to secure a win against West Ham tonight. Though not one of the bigger derbies in the Premier League, whenever two London-based teams face off there are fireworks of some sort. This fixture is particularly exciting, too, given that West Ham have enjoyed a decent spell under David Moyes, and so they won’t be an easy opponent for Spurs.

Mauricio Pochettino, then, will be happy that he’s received some very good news ahead of the game. As confirmed over on the Tottenham Twitter page, midfielder Mousa Dembele is set to be fit and available for the fixture, giving the Argentine manager another option in midfield.

Though Harry Winks has, in many ways, taken over the mantle from Dembele this season, the 30-year-old still maintains a very significant role within this squad. He’s missed parts of the campaign so far through injury, yet has made 15 appearances in the Premier League. That’s proof enough that Pochettino still values him highly.

Given the significance of this fixture, Pochettino could well opt to utilise him again, with his experience and quality likely to have a big effect in the middle of the park for Spurs.

It’s been an injury-hit season for Tottenham, with key men like Danny Rose and Toby Alderweireld suffering problems at points throughout the season, but our resident Lilywhites are hoping that Dembele’s return is the start of a chain that will see more key men return to action soon.

Landlord’s Verdict

Dembele is still crucial to Tottenham, and so his return is important.

Many of Pochettino’s men have played a lot of games over the festive period, and so rotation is key. For that reason, Dembele – who hasn’t played in the Premier League since Boxing Day – could come in immediately. The final decision is, of course, Pochettino’s, though.
