Tottenham supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in recent days after seeing their team ease past struggling Southampton 5-2 at Wembley on Boxing Day, in turn securing a fourth Premier League victory in five matches.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men went into their clash with the Saints off the back of beating Burnley 3-0 at Turf Moor, with striker Harry Kane bagging his seventh hat-trick of 2017 in a great win for the North London outfit. And the England star made it eight with an inspirational display at Wembley on Boxing Day, as his trio alongside efforts from Son Heung-min and Dele Alli sealed a comfortable victory for Spurs, who in turn remain just a point behind fourth place Liverpool in the Premier League table.
Consequently, there have been several delighted Tottenham fans in the Tavern in recent times, many of whom are likely to be further intrigued and encouraged by a recent report from Calcio Mercato, which suggests that Pochettino’s side are part of a heavyweight chase in pursuit of Ajax’s David Neres.
The 20-year-old made the move to the Dutch giants back in January of this year and has made quite an impact with 11 goals in just 33 games for the club, eight of which have come this term in their run to second place in the Eredivisie.
And with 11 assists in just 16 league appearances, the Brazilian winger is clearly making huge strides at Ajax, and it’s form which has reportedly attracted the interest of several heavyweight clubs around Europe, with AC Milan, Arsenal, Juventus, Manchester United, and of course Tottenham all reportedly keeping tabs on the 20-year-old.
Thus, it very much remains to be seen whether Pochettino’s side are indeed able to fend off intense competition to land Neres in the coming transfer windows.
Landlord’s verdict: David Neres was a complete unknown little over a year ago, now though he is one of the hottest properties in European football.
11 goals in just 33 games for Ajax this year and eight in just 16 Eredivisie appearances this term are indicative of a winger making huge strides in the Dutch capital, so much so that heavyweights around the continent are already thought to be interested in his services.
Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham are one side believed to be in the race, and given the Argentine’s recent success with nurturing young talent, the North London outfit may well be able to lure Neres to Wembley in the coming transfer windows.
