With the summer transfer window fast approaching, Tottenham Hotspur fans will be forgiven if they were nervous about some of their stars leaving the club. Although Mauricio Pochettino will likely be keen to add reinforcements to his squad of players, he will be desperate to keep his key men in north London as well.
However, it appears that Spurs are resigned to losing one of those individuals as a number of clubs prepare to swoop in for him.
What’s the News?
According to a report by The Mirror, Tottenham are prepared to cash in on Toby Alderweireld this summer for just £26million.
The Belgium international had a clause in his contract allowing him to leave for an offer that matched that price after Spurs triggered a 12-month contract extension after failing to agree to fresh terms.
Manchester United, Juventus and Barcelona are all thought to be poised to try and sign him, leaving Tottenham with no choice but to offload him for a bargain fee instead of risking him leaving for nothing.
Alderweireld has been an incredibly key player for Tottenham over the past couple of seasons, although the current campaign certainly appears to be his last in north London.
The 30-year-old has built a formidable partnership at the back of the defence with the likes of Jan Vertonghen, Juan Foyth and Davinson Sanchez recently – depending on who is in the team following a number of injuries.
The Belgian is thought to have become one of the Premier League’s best centre-backs during his time at Spurs, as he has produced a number of top-quality performances and has helped to take the club to new heights over the years, including being a side that regularly finishes in the top four.
However, every setback can potentially provide an opportunity and Alderweireld’s possible departure may not be the end of the world for Tottenham.
As mentioned, the club have already got the likes of Sanchez and Foyth in reserve, whilst the club could also look to spend the £26m they receive for the 30-year-old on a younger talent that could become better than he ever was.
Tottenham fans, what do you make of the situation surrounding Alderweireld? Was it something that was always going to happen? Join in with the discussion below by sharing your thoughts with us.
