I’m almost about to bar the Daily Mirror‘s Darren Lewis from the Football Transfer Tavern because he came in saying Tottenham Hotspur and ‘Spanish giants’ and the punters rolled their eyes, as we are sick and tired of hearing about Gareth Bale to Real Madrid.
Just as I’m about to tell Darren, he mentions Jan Vertonghen and the punters instantly look up from their lukewarm pints (and one even stumbles over from the pool table and pulls up a bar stool right next to him).
Darren says that the North London club have no intention of selling Vertonghen after only one season (“one successful season” a proud Tottenham fan shouts out from the back).
Furthermore, reports had suggested that Barcelona had in fact bid for the 26-year-old Belgian international but Darren has more good news for Tottenham fans, as Spurs have rubbished claims they have received a bid.
Spurs fans, I must admit, are regulars at the tavern and because of the on-going Bale transfer saga, they have created a rather downbeat atmosphere but that all changed this evening – the rounds were flowing, the jukebox was belting out and the snooker tournament was getting underway.
I was enjoying working again but my colleague turned to me and, quite rightly pointed out, that I should enjoy this while I can as the words ‘Bale’ and ‘Real Madrid’ are always on the tip of every journalists tongue.
