Tottenham should make a shock move for this £16.2m-rated Arsenal man – do you agree?

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern think that their side could do with a bit more midfield depth…

With the injury status of Mousa Dembele concerning fans, Tottenham are quite short on depth in the middle of the park. Beyond Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier, Pochettino can call on young Harry Winks, but a lack of other more experienced options is certainly concerning.

Tottenham have been able to manage lately, but this season – with the Champions League, Carabao Cup, Premier League and FA Cup all on the agenda – they might not be so lucky.

Thus, it makes sense for them to sign a new midfielder or two, and our landlord has thrown a surprising option out there: £16.2m-rated (via TransferMarkt) Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere. It would certainly be a surprising move, given the negative atmosphere between Tottenham and Arsenal, but could it make perfect sense for all parties?

For Wilshere, if he wants to regain his form, there is no better place than Tottenham. Mauricio Pochettino has been wonderful at getting the best out of English players, and if he can have half the effect on Wilshere as he has on Dele Alli and Harry Kane, then we might finally start to see the best of the midfielder. Beyond that, his technical skill and fantastic passing range will align perfectly with Pochettino’s philosophy, and so he’d fit in perfectly. The aforementioned lack of options would also likely mean regular game time, something that he isn’t getting at Arsenal.

For Tottenham, meanwhile, his homegrown status is obviously helpful, but so is his price tag. His current contract ends next summer, and so if he doesn’t re-sign, he could be available on a free. Financially, that makes a lot of sense, and whilst there may be concerns over his fitness, the lack of financial outlay means that this deal carries very little risk.  At 25-years-old, he’s still yet to reach his peak, and he has shown in fits and bursts this season that there is a lot of life in him yet.
