According to Spanish outlet Marca, via talkSPORT, Tottenham have begun talks with Real Madrid over the potential signing of midfielder Marco Asensio.

The 22-year-old Spain international is a target for Spurs should star man Christian Eriksen leave the club.

However, while Asensio would be a great signing for The Lilywhites, it is one that they should only make if the club lose Eriksen. If not, they have other areas that they can address.

The Spaniard is an extremely versatile player, capable of playing on the wing, as a central midfielder, or as an attacking midfielder. It is in the more advanced role that he looks to be the most dangerous. However, that is the one area of the field that Tottenham have an abundance of players in. Already there is the likes of Eriksen, Dele Alli, Son Heung-min, Érik Lamela and Lucas Moura playing in that area of the field. Adding another player would suddenly make it a very hard job for manager Mauricio Pochettino to balance his squad. That is why this move should only be made should the Dane leave.

On the other hand, outside of the attacking midfield position, Tottenham need players in practically every other area of the field. Their defensive midfield looks weak, and it seems to be a perennial transfer wish of Tottenham's to find a suitable replacement for Harry Kane.

Therefore, while this seems like it would be a great signing for Tottenham, it may be on that does more damage than good, as it stockpiles their attacking midfield to the point where good players will miss out.
