The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are concerned about the future of Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian is yet to sign a new deal, and so his long-term future is beginning to look increasingly uncertain.
However, fear not, as our landlord has a solution. He thinks that the uncertainty surrounding his future is only going to become more of a problem for Spurs, and so it might be time to cash in. They’ll need a replacement, of course, but defender Stefan de Vrij could be the perfect option.
Rated at £31.5 million by Transfer Markt, de Vrij, like Alderweireld, has yet to sign a new deal at current club Lazio, but unlike Tottenham’s Belgian defender – his contract expires in less than six months. As a result, he could be available on a free this summer, marking this deal out as a potential steal for Spurs.
In terms of what he can do on the pitch, the Dutchman is up there with some of Europe’s best. Standing at a towering 6ft2, his ability in the air is second-to-none, whilst his quality when the ball is on the floor is just as impressive. A solid passer of the ball, an excellent tackler, and a great reader of the game, there is truly no clear weaknesses in the Dutchman’s game.
Significantly, at 26-years-old, he’s a player that is just entering the prime of his career, and so Spurs would be able to enjoy his quality for a few years at the very least.
Daniel Levy has always been frugal and rarely has he been willing to spend big on proven talent, instead opting to utilise young, inexperienced players with bags of potential. In de Vrij, though, he’d have a different proposition. He’d have a proven, experienced defender for practically no financial outlay – how can he say no to that?
This deal makes perfect sense for Tottenham, and though Toby Alderweireld has been a great servant, perhaps it’s time to cash-in for a newer model.
