Tottenham should sign this very influential £9m-rated defender in January – agreed?

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern were desperate to sign Ryan Sessegnon this month, but owing to a report from the Telegraph last week – in which cold water is poured on the prospect – they have been left feeling disappointed.

However, our landlord thinks that he has identified the perfect player that Tottenham should sign instead, and he thinks that he’d be an even better fit than Sessegnon. The player in question is Augsburg defender Philipp Max, who is rated at £9 million by Transfer Markt.

A left-back by trade, the defender – like Sessegnon – is fantastic on the left-hand side, providing an outlet both defensively and offensively for his team. At 24-years-old, he’s a player that is entering the prime period of his career, and Spurs would be wise to ensure that they get to enjoy his presence during that period.

In order to see how effective he is, look no further than his assist tally this season. The German has picked up a simply sensational 9 assists this season, putting him beyond some of Europe’s most potent attacking forces. This identifies him as an offensive defender, and he certainly falls under that banner, but that doesn’t mean he’s weak defensively. His work-rate is great, whilst his tackling is also strong. He’s an attacking defender, but he’s more than comfortable at the back – and Pochettino would no doubt make both aspects of his game even better.

Tottenham’s system demands tireless players on the flanks, with their offensive threat required to provide width going forward. Max would fit into that system perfectly, whilst his defensive work will help to provide Pochettino with more strength at the back.

Max is perfect for Spurs – do you agree?
