Tottenham should target £13.5m-rated defender to help end Alderweireld’s time at the club

The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager for their defence to see an upgrade next season. Their usually unstoppable back-line had its fair share of problems last season, and that was arguably the difference between their failure to challenge for the Premier League title.

One major change that the team saw was the omission of Toby Alderweireld. They clearly suffered in his absence, and a mix of injury problems and a lack of certainty regarding his future leading Pochettino to regular leave him out of the team. It’s no coincidence that they let in 10 more goals last term in comparison to the year before, with Alderweireld the one major difference between the two teams.

This summer, then, Spurs need to factor that in, and they would be wise to bring in a player that can make Alderweireld – whether he stays or goes – more of an irrelevant figure. One player that would be perfect is Newcastle ace Jamaal Lascelles.

Lascelles, who is rated at £13.5 million by Transfer Markt, has consistently impressed in the heart of the Newcastle defence this season.

The 24-year-old, despite a lack of relative experience, has been right at home in the Premier League, displaying all the characters needed to play for a bigger side. Strong, powerful, consistent, relentless, determined – he has arguably been the focal point of the Newcastle team – and he often leads from the back.

He’d, of course, add some much-needed leadership to the Tottenham first team, given that he’s currently the captain of Newcastle under Rafael Benitez.

Furthermore, at just 24-years-old, he’s clearly a player that is still developing – and he’d struggle to find a better tutor than Lascelles.
