Tottenham have been linked with Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong for a while now, as it looks very likely that the 21-year-old midfielder will be leaving Amsterdam at the end of the season.
However, they have recently been dealt the hammer-blow that other European giants such as PSG and Man City are interested in the star. While this is a disappointment for Spurs in their pursuit in replacing Mousa Dembélé (who is expected to leave at the end of the season), there are other options that may actually be a better alternative.
The man that Tottenham should focus on signing is Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele. The Frenchman has been in terrific form this season both in Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and is developing a name for himself. Of course, there are good players playing all over Europe, but in the pursuit of replacing the Belgian maestro, Ndombele may be a better fit.
Dembélé is renowned for being one of the strongest midfielders on the ball in the Premier League, capable of powerful runs through the middle of the field. The Frenchman has both of those traits, whilst also being a more commanding defensive figure. While de Jong is probably equipped with a greater passing range, that is no necessarily Dembélé’s strength. He is not known to long expansive passes, instead frequent short passes to control the tempo of the game, the same as 21-year-old Lyon man.
However, Pochettino may not want a like-for-like replacement for the former Fulham man, but if he does, Ndombele seems to be a much better fit than the Dutchman.
