Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern were pleased to see their side return to winning ways with goals from Harry Kane and Dele Alli securing a 2-0 victory over Watford on Monday.
A top-four finish is not yet guaranteed for Spurs, but Mauricio Pochettino’s side have a game in hand over Liverpool in third and a five-point advantage over Chelsea in fifth. The Lilywhites were knocked out of the Champions League by Juventus in the round of 16 and reinforcements are needed in the summer if they are to challenge next year.
Toby Alderweireld could be set to depart the club following a rift with Pochettino, and the partnership of Jan Vertonghen and Davidson Sanchez has failed to blossom. A new centre-back could be high on his wish list.
Available for free in the summer, Lazio defender – Stefan De Vrij – should be on his shopping list. The Dutch international is valued at £36m according to Transfermarkt but is yet to put pen to paper on a new deal. The 26-year-old has been one of the best defenders in the Serie A in recent years and has been linked with both Chelsea and Barcelona in the past.
De Vrij has made 33 appearances in the Serie A this season, chipping in with six goals for his side. According to Squawka, he has made more blocks and interceptions per 90 minutes than all of Tottenham’s current centre-backs and would certainly go some way into replacingAlderweireld.
Given he would be available for nothing, this is a completely risk-free for Tottenham that would see them gain a great defender and free up funds to spend elsewhere.
Tottenham fans, would you like to see Stefan De Vrij at Wembley?
