The Tottenham fans in the Transfer Tavern think that Toby Alderweireld is one of Europe’s best defenders. The Belgian has been in fine form over the last few years since moving to Tottenham, and he has quickly established himself as one of the most consistent players in the Premier League. Offering expert defending, aerial expertise and solid technical play, he is essential to Mauricio Pochettino’s long-term plans.
It’s a real concern, then, that the Belgian’s future remains unassured. He has not been a part of the wave of recent players signing extended deals at Tottenham, and that has left the fans in the pub concerned. Indeed, their fear is only going to increase after a recent admission from the Belgian, too. According to the Sun, when questioned on whether he had held any more talks over a new deal, Alderweireld simply replied: “No.”
This is a real worry for the club, as that means that his future is far from assured. It’s difficult to have your head turned when your long-term future is assured, but with no new deal on the table, Alderweireld’s focus could well be elsewhere.
His current deal expires in 2020, and so there is time for Tottenham, but it is important to keep him happy and improve his contract as his form improves.
He has been important this season, appearing in eight Premier League games.
Tottenham simply cannot afford to lose Alderweireld. He is one of their most important players, and new talks need to get started as soon as possible.
There is obviously a reason for the lack of progress, but Pochettino needs to instruct Daniel Levy to get things going more quickly.
