Interesting reports fill the Football Transfer Tavern this evening as Tottenham supporters drown their sorrows following today’s disappointing home defeat to Newcastle United.
Today’s Mirror Football reports that Andre Villas-Boas has made clear that Jermain Defoe will not be sold during the upcoming January window, much to the pleasure of Spurs fans situation in the bar.
Speculation has been rife in the tavern during recent weeks with transfers to QPR and Toronto both suggested as possible destinations for the England international.
Summer signing Roberto Soldado has been used as the first choice striker this term by Villas-Boas but he maintains that the 31-year-old still has a future at White Hart Lane.
“We are happy with the goals he is producing,” said Villas-Boas.
“He is on nine already so it is a great start for him and doesn’t change our perspective regarding him.
“We have been rotating and given opportunities to players who have been playing in the Europa League to break into the Premier League team.
“Jermain played against West Ham then we went back to Soldado in the Premier League. We are extremely happy with both of them.”
It is clear to us in the tavern that Spurs’ rotation policy, that has seen Defoe start on the bench for most Premier League matches, will affect his chances to feature for England in the World Cup next summer but Villas-Boas believes that his recent call ups dispute this assertion.
“I am not sure about Roy Hodgson’s selection process but what I have seen is that he has been counting on Jermain in the same way and he has been included in all call-ups this season.
“So that wouldn’t appear to matter on his selection.”
