It’s ‘Happy Hour’ in the Football Transfer Tavern at the moment and the 2-for-1 specials attract all sorts of people, most notably this hour we had Dave Kidd and Tom Hopkinson of The Mirror in, telling us about Stoke City’s move for Tottenham Hotspur striker Jermain Defoe.
A rumour being discussed by the chaps over at the jukebox, is that Andre Villas-Boas is ready to listen to offers for the England international, with Spurs valuing Defoe at £6 million and looking to bring his second spell at the club, to an end.
The former Portsmouth striker has accepted his time may have come to an end at White Hart Lane, with the North London club rumoured to be interested in Barcelona’s David Villa, Valencia’s Roberto Soldado and Aston Villa’s Christian Benteke.
Mark Hughes will be hoping that Peter Crouch and Defoe can recreate their successful ‘little and large’ strike partnership that they had for Pompey, Spurs and England, that’s assuming that Hughes can convince Crouch to reject advances from his former manager Harry Redknapp to join Queens Park Rangers’ attempts to earn promotion back to the Premier League.
A few punters have suggested if Hughes can get the best out of Defoe then, signing a striker with 100 Premier League goals, for £6 million could well prove to be one of the signings of the summer.
