Here in the Football Transfer Tavern, we were interested in news from the Daily Mail as they claim that Gareth Bale could well be struggling to cope with the pressure of being under constant scrutiny.
The forward has been linked with a move to Real Madrid all summer and is now seeing just half of what the Los Blancos circus could well become. Wales manager Chris Coleman noted that he has seen a difference in Bale during the last couple of weeks and claimed that the forward is quiet and could well find all the attention difficult to handle. He spoke after the midweek internationals and claimed
‘I have sympathy for Gareth because all he wants to do is play football. He’s not the type of boy to like all that attention. He’s a quiet boy.
‘You can’t imagine that someone is going to pay that amount of money for you. He’s been Gareth Bale and a Tottenham superstar for the last three or four years, but this is another thing. This week has probably hit him. Psychologically, it’s been difficult.’
Of course a move is not set in stone, with Daniel Levy holding Florentino Perez and Carlo Ancelotti to ransom over the proposed world record fee and despite the relationship between Andre Villas Boas and Bale breaking down, Spurs still see a future for Bale at the club. As one of our punters quips, it would not be a shock to see Bale chose to spend another season in London just to escape the media glare.
