Tottenham star wanted as Spanish giants’ fifth signing

vertonghen.jpgBarcelona have splashed the cash already this summer and it now seems the Tottenham fans in the Football Transfer Tavern should be worried.

As according to the Daily Express, Lilywhites defender Jan Vertonghen is next on the Catalan club’s list this summer having already raided Premier League rivals Liverpool for Luis Suarez.

Luis Enrique’s side have also already brought in Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Ivan Rakitic and Claudio Bravo this summer.

Vertonghen is being lined up as a replacement for club legend Carles Puyol who confirmed his retirement from football at the end of last season.

According to reports, the La Liga giants could bid up to £17.5 million for the Belgian defender as they prepare for the upcoming campaign.

The former Ajax defender’s future has been more than uncertain in recent times after the North London club failed to reach the Champions League despite spending more than £100 million last summer.

The Belgian international wants to play in the competition and Barcelona could now give him the chance with a move.

He would also increase his wages by a further £20,000 per week to £60,000 by moving to the Camp Nou and it is thought that Vertonghen will be keen.

But Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is a notoriously tough nut to crack and is unlikely to want to lose his star defender this summer.

So it is likely Levy will squeeze everything he can out of the Spanish side should they form up their interest.

Tottenham fans. Would it be wrong for your club to stand in the way of Jan Vertonghen’s Champions League dreams? Let us know your thoughts below.
